In this article, we will explore the steps to configure Failover on Ruijie SMB devices:

Introduction

What is Failover and What Is It Used For?

Failover is employed for multiple redundant network connections, configuring it so that if one connection fails, the other is automatically activated. Another option is to use a primary connection and a backup connection, setting up Failover so that in the event of a primary connection failure, the backup connection is automatically activated.

This configuration is typically used when there are service providers with significant speed differences. The faster connection is set as the primary, while the secondary serves as a backup until the primary connection is restored.

If the device is still in its factory default settings, it is recommended to follow the initial setup manually before proceeding with the following configuration.

Configuration

1.- Access the Router's web interface and select the 'Router' tab.

*If you have the default IP, it is 192.168.110.1.

2.- Select the 'Network' section and then click on WAN.

3.- In that section, it will provide options to select the internet service lines or WAN ports. Subsequently, choose the 'Load Balancing Settings v4' option.

4.- We fill in the configuration data as follows.

Example:

  • Load Mode: Active/Secondary

Note: When dealing with more than 2 ISPs, we can work with load balancing between 2 and implement Failover with the 3rd. If only 2 ISPs are managed, select one as primary and the other as secondary.

The following parameters are for the case of load balancing. If not using load balancing, the policy can be any, and the loads should be set to 1 for both primary and secondary.

  • Load Balancing Policy:

- Based on Connections: If not dealing with bank transactions, this option can be selected.

- Source IP-Based: Useful for maintaining the connection for each request. This is suitable for working with banks.

- Traffic with the same source and destination IP address combination will consistently use the same outbound interface.

- Smart Load Balancing: when enabled, optimizes the distribution of network traffic across multiple links.

  • WAN Load: Traffic will be distributed across multiple links based on the load of each WAN port.

Save the changes, and your configuration will be ready.

Verification

Disconnect your primary service and wait for the device to switch to the secondary provider. Then, reconnect your primary service to have the connection switch back, and all traffic will go through the primary WAN.
