How to setup AI roaming

Wireless roaming improves user experience by allowing devices with weak signals to connect to stronger access points (APs).

Traditional Roaming involves disconnecting from a weak AP and reconnecting to a stronger one, but it can lead to packet loss, delays, and long association processes.

802.11 k/v Roaming improves this by enabling APs to guide the client’s connection decisions based on signal data. However, it can still face delays if clients don’t respond to steering.

AI Roaming uses AI to optimize roaming decisions, adapting to the device’s needs, providing smoother transitions, especially in complex environments. It requires devices running ReyeeOS1.219 or later.

Layer 2/3 Roaming ensures continuous network connectivity when moving between APs. Layer 2 roaming happens within the same network, while Layer 3 covers different subnets. Layer 2 roaming is enabled by default.

Configuration Steps

1) Log in to Ruijie Cloud, choose Project > Configuration > Network-Wide > Optimization > AI Roaming.

2) Toggle on AI Roaming. Once AI Roaming is toggled on, 802.11K/V Roaming is also enabled, which can be enabled or disabled independently.

3) When the topology changes (for example, the location of an AP is changed), click tap here to perform a scan of the wireless environment again.

4) View roaming results.

  • Roaming Experience: The roaming experience is evaluated based on the latency, signal quality, and stability.

  • Number of Roams: Indicates the number of roams from both the AP and client perspectives.

  • Number of AI Profiles: Indicates the number of AI roaming profiles applied to wireless clients.
AP: Number of times the AI profiles generated for clients on the AP.

Client: Number of times a client is guided by AI profiles generated by the AP.

5) Click AI Roaming Logs to view detailed logs.

6) Click More Details on the Overview page or click View all APs or View all clients on the AI Roaming page to access the Roaming Dashboard page.

7) The following figure shows the Roaming Dashboard page.

  • Roaming Experience: Number of roams above the service level goal/total number of roams.

  • Number of Incidents: Number of roaming stickiness, sub-optimal roaming, inter-band roaming, ping-pong roaming, and roaming delay incidents.

  • Impact Rate: Number of roaming incidents on a roaming route/Total number of roaming incidents.

  • Incidence: Number of roaming incidents on a roaming route/Total number of roams.

8) Click View Details in the Action column for details.

Layer 2/Layer 3 Roaming

Note: When Layer 3 roaming is enabled, you must select the target SSIDs for Reyee RG-RAP series APs, while for Ruijie RG-AP series APs, Layer 3 roaming applies to all SSIDs.

  • Toggle on L3 Roaming.

  • Select the target SSIDs and click Save.
