What is a VLAN?

A VLAN, acronym for Virtual LAN (Virtual Local Area Network), is a method for creating independent networks within the same physical network.

RG-AP180

As you can see, the Enterprise line access point from Ruijie has four ports where different devices can be connected.

Next, the configuration to create VLANs on the access point and assign it to a specific port is explained.

The first thing we need to do is to access the access point directly through the IP address or through a tunnel created from the web portal.

Once we enter the RG-AP180 and log in, we will have the following window.

To perform the configuration, click on the 'Config' menu.

Where it shows the following window and the options to configure in the panel on the left side.

In that panel, we will select the 'Network' section.

The first thing we are going to configure is a VLAN to later assign it to a specific port.

For that, we select the VLAN menu and review the default configuration. It can be observed that it has the default VLAN with ID 1.

Click on '+ Add VLAN' to create it.

So that the configuration window appears, where the data is filled in, and the VLAN is created.

In this case, we are going to create VLAN 10, so we entered the following parameters:

VLAN: 10

IP Allocation Mode: Static IP Address

IP: 192.168.10.1

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Then, click on the 'Save' button, and we observe the VLAN already created and configured.

With the VLAN configured, the next step is to assign it to a specific port so that the network segment we just created, along with the VLAN, exits through that port only.

To do this, in the left-side configuration menu panel, select the 'Interfaces' option.

We are going to perform the configuration in this case on Ethernet port 3. Therefore, click on the edit button on port 3, which is named Gi0/3.

In the port configuration, we enter the VLAN ID that was created, which in this case is ID 10. In the description, we enter 'VLAN 10' solely for informational purposes to know that VLAN 10 is assigned to that port. Then, click on the 'Save' button.

We observe the result.

With these simple steps, we finish the configuration to create a VLAN on the RG-AP180 and assign it to a specific port.
