INTRODUCTION

A captive portal is a tool used to control and manage access to a wireless or wired network. User accounts play a crucial role in Ruijie captive portals, enabling network administrators to control and restrict user access.

By utilizing accounts in a Ruijie captive portal, administrators can identify and authenticate network users. This allows them to establish customized access policies for each user based on their profile and role within the organization. Accounts also facilitate network management and usage tracking, making it easier to troubleshoot issues and optimize the network.

In terms of use cases, user accounts in a Ruijie captive portal are particularly useful in corporate, educational, and hospitality environments. In a corporate setting, accounts can be used to grant access to employees, contractors, and visitors based on their role in the organization. In an educational environment, accounts can be used to provide access to teachers, students, and support staff. In the hospitality sector, accounts can be used to grant access to hotel guests, with different permissions based on their length of stay or consumption.

CONFIGURATION

NOTE: It is assumed that you have already created the hotspot template; the following article is recommended: Ruijie - Captive Portal Template

Within the template configuration, the 'Account' option is enabled.

Save the configuration and synchronize again.

CREATION OF GROUPS

Subsequently, accounts and groups containing navigation rules must be created. To do this, go to User Management.

First, create the group in User Group > +Add and fill in the following parameters:

  • User group name: Name to identify the group.

  • Concurrent devices: This section defines the number of devices that can operate with this user simultaneously.

  • Period: Define the time duration of the user's session on the network.

  • Quota: The amount of MB the user can use.

  • Maximum upload/download rate: Upload/download speed that the user will have on the network.

Bind MAC on first use: If enabled, the MAC Address is associated with the user for the first device that logs in with it.

USER CREATION

In the Account section > Add account, generate the users as needed.

  • User name: Name of the user to enter the captive portal.

  • Password: Password for the user to enter the captive portal.

  • User group: Group or policy that will be applied to this user; in this case, add the one created in the previous step.

This way, the captive portal is configured with users, and the groups and users are created based on the needs.

VALIDATION

When users connect to the network with the configured portal, the login page should appear, and a valid user must be entered:

In the portal, you can see who is connected with users in Monitoring > Client > Auth Client.
