At times, when deploying multiple access points, it may not be possible to wire all the equipment, either for aesthetic reasons, lack of preparation for wiring, or simply due to cost. This is where the Mesh function comes in, where at least one access point needs to be wired for other devices to connect to it wirelessly, enabling communication without the need for wiring.

NOTE:

  • It is not recommended to have more than 3 Mesh hops because there is a considerable loss between each hop.

  • For the Mesh function in Ruijie, it should be clarified that only SMB devices perform this function, except for the RG-RAP2200(F) model. Enterprise devices such as RG-AP180, RG-AP680(CD), and RG-AP820-L(V3) do not support Mesh.

MESH CONFIGURATION IN RUIJIE

We need to have a minimum firmware version of v1.86.1827 or later. To learn how to update to this version, you can check the following article: Ruijie - Update firmware (v1.86.1827) locally.

Once the devices are updated, added to the same project, and connected via wired connection, check that the Mesh function is enabled in the settings.

Once it has been verified that the Mesh function is activated, proceed to disconnect the devices that will operate wirelessly from the LAN, leaving them only powered (preferably restart the equipment).

Afterwards, we access the Mesh of the access point again and select Scan to add the Mesh access point so that the devices that will be using Mesh can locate it.

We select the found devices and enter the password (the password of the project to which the device belongs). After that, it enables a checkbox, we select it, and click on Mesh.

Once the linking process is complete, the devices linked wirelessly through the Mesh function will appear, specifying the access point to which they are connecting.
