How to configure an SMB router as a PPTP VPN client

In this article, we will learn the steps to configure Failover on Ruijie SMB devices:

VPN

Virtual Private Network (VPN): It is a technology used to interconnect 2 or more private networks located in different locations or a remote client to a company's network.

  • PPTP: Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, uses port 1723 in TCP.

Configuration

1.- Access our router and select the "Router or Gateway" tab (Depending on the firmware version).

*If the default IP is 192.168.110.1

2.- Select the VPN section -> PPTP.

Enable the option.

3.- The option "PPTP Type" will be enabled; in this case, select "Server." Proceed to fill in the following information as follows.

Username: Generated by the VPN server router (Request your credentials). In this case, it is Ruijie.

Password: Generated by the VPN server router (Request your credentials). In this case, it is Ruijie.

Interface: Select the WAN port through which you want to establish the connection (if managing more than one).

Tunnel IP:

  • Dynamic: If the VPN server assigns IP addresses to VPN clients.

  • Static: If the VPN server does not assign IP addresses to VPN clients.

Server Address: Enter the public IP or DDNS where the VPN server is located.

Same Level Subnet: This is the LAN network segment managed by the VPN server; it is used to establish the communication route to that network.

MPPE: Enable this service.

Operation Mode: If you only want communication with the network segment on the other side of the VPN, select Router.

PPP Greeting Interval: 10 (Default).

Save the changes.

4.- Wait a few seconds after applying the change, then proceed to the "Tunnel List" section. If the connection is successful, it will appear as follows.

With this, your communication setup should be ready.
