When dealing with corporate or educational networks, the goal is to provide internet connectivity or access to a database for information. However, there may be a desire to prevent recreational or leisure use of internet access.
While it's common to block specific websites from WiFi Access Points (APs), this is not sufficient when users are using mobile apps, as they operate differently from web browsers. Mobile apps have different 'domains,' and they frequently update, making it challenging to block them by specifying web domains.
To achieve blocking of these types of apps on the network, a router with the capability to inspect the type of traffic circulating in the network is needed. While it may not directly block the app, it can prevent the traffic it uses from transmitting, thus preventing the loading of non-productive information.
To configure this blocking on a Ruijie router, you can follow these steps:
Step 1
We access the router using its IP and go to the menu
Router >> Behavior >> Application Control.
Step 2
By default, the device will come with the China library. We switch to the international version.
Step 3
We click on '+Add,' and a window will appear where we can choose whether to apply this configuration to the entire network or to specific IPs in the network. We can select the type of traffic to block, for example, we can choose Video to block YouTube, and then click on 'Accept.'
Once we have completed this step, the rule will have been added to the network, and it will no longer allow traffic of that type, regardless of the mobile app.
