How to make a DHCP reservation to assign a fixed IP to a device

DHCP is used by everyone when connecting their mobile devices at home, going to university, entering a café, etc. It is a system that dynamically assigns IPs based on a configured 'scope' or pool of IPs. The DHCP server assigns IPs sequentially as devices join the network or randomly, depending on the DHCP server.

This allows us to have a fixed IP within the range of dynamic IPs that we allocate to different devices connecting to the network. Even the simplest home network is starting to have multiple devices, which will increase soon as the Internet of Things (IoT) dominates our home and professional lives.

To start with the guide, we must identify the device we want to reserve the IP, which can be done using the MAC address or the device's hostname.

1.- Access the device with the following default data:

  • IP Address: 192.168.110.1

  • Password: (This is created the first time we access the device).

2.- When we enter our credentials, we can access the Router Dashboard. On the left side, we can see the following menu; we select 'Router'.

3.- Then we go into Network -> LAN

4.- Once inside that section, we will select the 'DHCP Clients' tab. Afterward, we can see the IPs that each device has obtained automatically from the DHCP Server. We select the device and accept the changes, as shown in the following screenshots.

5.- Finally, we go to the 'Static Addresses' tab, where we will find the reservations we have made.

This is how the DHCP server reservation is done.
